Mediterranean Cruise Convention - 2008
Photos of WWI members and guests on the Mediterranean Cruise–the 39th annual World Wings International convention–aboard Norwegian Cruise Line’s newest and most glamorous ship, The Norwegian Gem, setting sail on October 12th from the sophisticated Spanish city of Barcelona. Ports of call included Valletta (Malta), Naples (Pompeii), the Eternal City of Rome, Florence / Pisa (Livorno), and Nice (Villefranche) before returning to Barcelona.
Highlights and more information:
We departed from Barcelona and had ports of call at:
Valletta (Malta), a UNESCO World Heritage Center. The capital of Malta is inextricably linked to the history of the military and charitable Order of St. John of Jerusalem. Valletta’s 320 monuments, within a small area, make it one of the most concentrated historic areas in the world.
Naples (Italy) is home to 448 historical churches, 13 castles and stands in the shadows of Mt. Vesuvius and the ruins of Pompeii (fabulous!). Many visited nearby Sorrento, the Amalfi Coast and the islands of Capri and Ischia.
Rome (Civitavecchia). The Vatican, the Sistine Chapel, Trevi Fountain, the Coliseum and the Pantheon are among the major sights in Rome. Churches, museums and historical places make Rome one of the most interesting and visited cities on the planet.
Florence/Pisa (Livorno). Many enjoyed Pisa with its leaning tower. Florence, in the heart of Tuscany, long ruled by the Medici family, was home of the Renaissance. It is home to the famous Uffizi Gallery, Pitti Palace, the Duomo, Ponte Vecchio, and Michelangelo’s David.
Nice (Villefranche). Nice is in the heart of the French Riviera. Many outdoor cafes dot the waterfront where some sampled the fine French food and wine. Nearby is Monte Carlo with its beautiful homes, shops and casinos and interesting old towns such as Lucca and St. Paul de Vence.
